Biography

Born in Tokyo, Fumio Tanai received his degree in Photography from Tokyo Polytechnic University, where he studied under notable Japanese photographer and filmmaker Eikoh Hosoe.  In his series of combined portraits and rooms titled Signs, Tanai captures both the subject's senstivity and depth of identity through a realistic examination of the essence of being.

His work has earned worldwide recognition, resulting in numerous exhibitions at museums and galleries in Paris, New York and Tokyo, including joint exhibitions with master photographers Robert Frank and Daido Moriyama.  His work can be found in the public collections of Bibliotèque nationale de France in Paris, Hungary Japan Museum in Budapest, and the Echizen Paper & Culture Museum of Japan.
