Matt Hoyle, Icebergs
The series "Icebergs" was shot in 2003 and 2004, during the winter of each year. It's a personal collection, part of a larger ensemble that Matt has done on winter swimmers around the world from Russia to Coney Island to Australia.
This specific series of "Icebergs" is from Australia.
To get the shot, Matt usually asks the viewer to look right through him, to think of nothing. Matt wants the essence of who they are without performing.
In these pictures Matt wanted to depict the real characters of this particular swimming club, to make beautiful the so-called imperfections of their faces: the laugh lines, the wrinkles, the freckles, the missing teeth.
Matt shot their faces close-up, almost as landscapes to give them a certain dignity and power.
This is the first time Matt Hoyle is showing "Icebergs" as a solo exhibiton.
